The Builders

So much of what goes into design + build + restoration is work done with your hands. From ornamental detail on wooden banisters, to original cabinetry etching- the craftsman at Capitol Hill Construction take your project and make it their craft.

Jeff Ryder, Construction Manager, Founder

Originally from New England, Jeff’s passion for skiing and fly fishing brought him to Utah. Jeff launched his construction career over 35 years ago, erecting steel buildings while on summer break from Brighton. After apprenticing with local master Paul Deeley, Jeff ventured out on his own, partnering at times with John Griswold and tackling projects from bathroom remodels to multi-story additions. An original partner at Capitol Hill Construction, he brings decades of experience with both traditional and contemporary projects. Jeff has a fine aesthetic sense, and is known for the cleanest job sites in town. Jeff is responsible for our many award winning collaborations with the late designer Robert Brain. He lives in the Harvard-Yale neighborhood with his lovely wife, Tina

John "Gris" Griswold, Construction Manager, Founder

John, a native of Palo Alto California, began his construction career with Trolley Square Construction before starting his own carpentry business in 1976. John has designed and built homes on Capitol Hill and in West Yellowstone Montana, remodeled dozens of homes, and collaborated for more than twenty years with Jeff Ryder. An original partner in Capitol Hill Construction, John enjoys skiing, fly fishing, and duck hunting. A fabulous water color artist and classical pianist, John lives in the Millcreek area with his faithful lab Max.

Pedro Caro, Construction Manager

After learning under master carpenter and general contractor Tim Hoagland, Pedro joined Capitol Hill Construction in 2004. He quickly rose to the role of construction manager and in the eleven years since, his sharp intellect and warm personality has made him a source of considerable repeat business. He is comfortable managing the full range of projects, from the largest of additions to the details of restoring an historic Avenue's porch.

Ben Andrews, Construction Manager

Another career builder, “Big Ben” established his own contracting business, Capitol City Building in 2004, which he operated until 2009 when we persuaded him to join Capitol Hill Construction. Ben is an excellent construction manager who can take a project from the first load of concrete in the footers to the last shingle on the roof, while rarely missing a beat. Ben recently relocated from Sugarhouse to the Sandy area where he lives with extended family.

Brandon Harding, Carpenter/ Construction Manager

From remodeling apartment buildings in the Salt Lake Valley, to the ground-up construction of homes in Southern Idaho, Brandon has over twenty-five years of experience in construction. He joined Capitol Hill Construction in 2014, after working alongside Jim Burdette at Sunup Building remodeling homes in the Sugarhouse neighborhood of Salt Lake City. Brandon is a true carpenter who loves working with his hands and enjoying a life lived in the vast spaces of the west with his family at his side.

Rich Hyde, Painter/Assistant Carpenter

With over a decade of experience painting homes in Montana and Utah, Rich came to Capitol Hill Construction from fellow builders Weston and Amy Noyes in 2009. His patient and thorough approach to painting has made him an invaluable addition to the team. With his foresight and attention to detail as a foundation, his carpentry skills have expanded in recent years, and Rich is often brought on to a job in the final stages to ensure that all the finishing touches are crisp and neat.

Oscar Gonzales, Assistant Carpenter

With a great set of hands and an enthusiastic personality Oscar joined Capitol Hill Construction in 2009. After working alongside Pedro for five years he has begun to run his own jobs. Oscar moonlights as a stone counter top fabricator in the evenings, and brings an element of precision to everything he does. In his spare time he can be found working on his growing collection of cars and trucks and spending time with his two young boys.

Edgar Caro, Assistant Carpenter

After helping around the office for years, Edgar finally strapped on a tool belt and is learning carpentry and general construction. Often working alongside Pedro, his positive attitude and willing set of hands make him an ideal carpenter's apprentice.
